La Palma is the first Starlight Reserve on Earth. It is an honour certified by the UNESCO Starlight Iniciative which confirms that the Islnad is committed to preserve the quality of the night sky while also facilitating the access to everyone to the light of the stars.
This is why La Palma promotes issues associated to the quality and enjoyment of the sky such as cultural values (archaeoastronomical sites), scientifical values (research), astronomical (Observatories & amateur stargazing), lanscaping and natural sites (astronomical viewpoints, etc), turism such as astrolapalma.com services & services provided by other local business such as restaurants, hotels and events.
Currently, La Palma has exclusion zones where natural light conditions at night and sky transparency are intact. Also, the Island, has a plan of action for those areas in which the quality of the night sky can improve and light polltion can be reduce to a minimum.
